Alta Vista Counseling
A Higher View of Hope and Healing
The AVC Approach
In the fall of 1994, two little girls (that's us -- Mary and Lydia!) met in an elementary school in Louisville, KY. Our lives took different paths, but it wasn't until 26 years later that we found ourselves in the same place again, this time at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary for a master's in Marriage and Family Therapy. As the only mothers in our cohort, we bonded over our shared experiences and dreams. Our conversations about parenting, relationships, and life's challenges led us to a shared vision of starting a therapy practice. Specifically one that could offer our community a higher view of hope and healing. As such, Alta Vista Counseling was born.
As mothers of young children, our practice is deeply informed by our approach to parenting. Just as we believe that children deserve a nurturing, creative, empowering place to find comfort and the freedom to explore, we believe you and your family deserve a nurturing, creative, empowering therapeutic experience. We draw on our extensive training and expertise to provide this, using experiential approaches and evidence-based practices such as Internal Family Systems, Child-Centered Play Therapy, The Gottman Method, and Emotionally Focused Therapy. Our goal is to empower you to find hope and healing with confidence.
As Marriage and Family Therapy associates, we bring a wealth of expertise in systemic therapy. Our training allows us to work effectively with individuals, couples, and families as they navigate a wide range of challenges, including grief and loss, trauma, anxiety and stress, life transitions, addiction, religious abuse, and more. We are LGBTQIA+ affirming, trauma-informed, client-centered, and have a special heart for those navigating the postpartum phase of life, birth trauma, and infant/pregnancy loss, as well as families who are mourning the loss of a parent or child. We are also well-suited to serve school-aged children and their families.
Hope and healing are not just words to us; they are the essence of our practice, and we are genuinely excited to journey with you on this path. If any of what we've shared resonates with you, we encourage you to reach out.
Warmly,
Lydia and Mary
